Choosing the right furniture for your space is the key. Your choices might not be exactly what you want now, but they will be the right choices for you over time. Remember, after you buy the “right” furniture you will end up customizing the space with your “stuff” anyway and the furniture will blend into the space. But, as you start your bedroom furniture shopping, consider these “right” choices.

Shopping from the beginning

As a start shopping for bedroom furniture consider the bedroom as empty and your wallet as reasonably full. What do you really need in a bedroom anyway? Start with the true basics. You will need: a bed, a dresser, a night stand or two with lamps and a good chair or two with possibly a table and lamp. This is really about it and you could probably do without a couple of these items as well. Start slow and go for the true basics first. Past the bed (minus the headboard), try to pick a piece that you want to have with you for the rest of your life. From here, build around that piece. Choose carefully and take as long as you need. As long as you have the bed and a ceiling light you’re ok for a few days.

Quality/price

The big thing to remember is that furniture made today is not made to the same quality standards that it may have been made to a decade or five ago. As you go about shopping for that first piece you plan on keeping for the rest of your life be prepared to spend a bit more for it. Look for solid dove tail joints, solid real wood and quality hardware. Most people would think of the dresser as being this piece. It does not necessarily need to have a mirror or jewelry drawers built into it but regardless of how old you happen to be make sure it can stand up and be passed down though the generations.
The next item to consider in this regard is its style. Some woods cost more then others. Generally, but not always, the more expensive pieces are traditional in nature and are fairly non-unique. They are made this way because of tradition, but also because they appeal to many types of people. They are also made this way because they rarely go out of style. This is a very large consideration. Styles change and you don’t want a shag dresser when you are 55 years old. Buy bedroom furniture that will always be in style regardless of passing fads and your age.

Reacting to light

Different furniture reflects light is different ways. A heavy oak piece of furniture will reflect light differently then a light piece of bamboo furniture. Set a color style for the more likely lighting scenario you are likely to run into with regard to your housing tastes.

Color of furniture

If you are looking at the color choices, when choosing bedroom furniture, you will want them to match one another when you are first buying them. They can be ight or dark, textured or smooth it is all a matter of keeping everything to the same style and matching color. Consider this; however, look at the construction of the piece of furniture. How is it made under the fabric? Look and ask about its ability to be reupholstered. Some furniture carcasses are not made to stand up to being pulled apart for a rehab while others are more apt to be.

Easy of the volume

Considering a piece of furniture’s volume is a fairly important idea. You may be in a larger bedroom at the moment and a larger piece will fit to scale and space nicely. Move once or twice and that piece will either disappear into a corner or take up half the room; visually or physically. This is a difficult thing to consider since there are not too many people in today’s mobile world that know where they are going to be in 5-10 years. There is really no answer for this dilemma other then to try to stay within a reasonable size spectrum. The love seat may look to be a good idea at the moment, but is it really?

Be realistic about your true tastes

The big thing about buying furniture is to come to terms with what you really want in your most personal space. This generally means coming to terms with who you really are. Not who you are at this point in your life, but who you really are in your own heart and style. This will not change through your lifetime. Buy your bedroom furniture from there and be comfortable when you go to sleep and when you wake up.

Retro furniture not just sounds interesting; it also has a rich history to be proud of. The word “retro” has its origin from the 1950’s cutting right through the times with current furniture items. The decade produced a diverse range of ideas and innovative furniture. There were many names and designs that revolutionized the furniture era with modern designs like steel tubular furniture, G-plan and other innovative designs that forms the concept of ‘retro’.

Retro belongs to mid century classics and includes Bauhaus furniture and lavish leather sofas that left its modern impression and are still much adored. The style is back and it’s the rage like never before. But before we purchase some classic retro furniture, let us learn a bit about its history. Belonging to the era and before are some names that have steeped the history of retro modern classic furniture. Telling the tale of some unsung and recognized heroes from the times should include,

Eileen Gray: An unsung name, Eileen Gray was a designer and architect who won acclaim quite later in her life. Her designs were modern and had an individualistic mark that inspired both modernists and the Art Deco. Her collaboration with architect and critic Jean Badovici led to introduction of tubular steel furniture, rugs and lighting for her studio and Galerie Jean Désert.

Joseph Hoffman: An Austrian architect and town planner, he was popularly known as “Quadralateral Hoffmann” for his passion for geometric forms. His armchairs and sofas in geometric patterns were a rage with modern classic designer and craftsmen. Hoffman`s modern classic work combined the rationalism of Wagner with geometrical, rectilinear style of decoration influenced by Charles R. Mackintosh.

Le Corbusier : Charles-Edouard Jeanneret-Gris, or more popularly known as Le Corbusier (October 6, 1887 – August 27, 1965), was a Swiss-born architect, designer, urbanist, writer and painter. Also recognized for his visionary architecture, what now is called Modern Architecture, Le Corbusier started his venture on furniture design in 1928 after inviting the architect, Charlotte Perriand, to join his studio.

Charles Ray Eames: Charles Eames (1907-1978) and his wife started the modern classics trend in the 20th century with their great designs and child-development toys and puzzles. They were a successful couple whose work designs like seating furniture in mesh, metal legged chairs and other revolutionary designs were much admired worldwide.

George Nelson: George Nelson was a visionary architect and designer with rare talent. His work includes Marshmallow sofa, the Nelson platform bench and the first L-shaped desk, a forerunner to the present-day modern workstation. He also designed graphic wall clocks, bubble lamps made of self-webbing plastic and developed forward looking, occasionally futuristic concepts.

Harry Bartoia: A futuristic Italian designer, Harry Bertoia envisioned futuristic designs that inspire people today. His patented Diamond chair for Knoll in 1952 is an unusually beautiful piece of furniture. The unique quality about the chair was its robustness within the light and almost petite frame, making it a huge commercial success. With the success of Diamond chair, the world was introduced to a new material—wire mesh and it was a great icon of modern design.

Marcel Breuer: Marcel Breuer is famous even today for his modern classic designs better known as the Breuer Chairs. Well acclaimed for his Simplistic designs combined with neat lines make these chairs exceptionally popular. The range of Breuer chairs includes Marcel Breuer Cesca Arm Chair, Breuer Wassily Chair, and Marcel Breuer Cesca Chair etc. Besides Breuer Chairs, the Breuer label is also known for Marcel Breuer Bookshelves.

Mies Van Der Rohe: A popular architect of his times, Mies Van Der Rohe built one of his most famous buildings, the German Pavilion at the International Exposition in Barcelona, for which he also created a chair called the Barcelona Chair. He was considered a visionary architect whose work was much acclaimed worldwide.

Retro design furniture from the Fifties onwards includes many designers from the USA as well as Europe and Scandinavia. From the US, designers had a huge impact on furniture production throughout the, world. Once you have decided on a retro theme of furniture like mesh, steel or leather or perhaps a merger of themes, check out for details like color and finish the manufacturer has to offer. Retro is backing the big way. And you can be sure that it will be in vogue. How you team it up with your modern furniture is a creative venture by itself.

Furniture restoration is heard in a variety of settings. If you like watching do-it-yourself shows, shows that help determine the value of antiques, like the Antique Road Show on PBS and other similar programs, you may someday find yourself looking around your home and thinking you’ve got some furniture restoration projects you wouldn’t mind taking on yourself.

Some furniture restoration projects are fairly simple and straightforward. Getting rid of a waxy build-up on an antique table or roll top desk, for example, is a project that may be different and much more difficult than what it was originally anticipated to be. What you thought was just build-up may actually be deterioration of the item’s finish.

Before immediately going to furniture refinishing, however, there are steps you can take to make sure you are doing the job right. In some cases, by removing the build-up, you can see that the project may be as simple as cleaning the surface with a soft rag and mineral spirits. In other cases, refinishing furniture is the only way you can fix the problem; this is often the case when the surface finish has been softened and cleaning it leaves exposed wood.

Rather than stripping the finish of many wood tables, cabinets and desks, the weekend do-it-yourself project doer often looks at the possibility of refinishing furniture by painting over the existing finish. Before taking on this method of furniture refinishing, you should make sure the original finish does not have cracks within it, otherwise those cracks may show even after your furniture refinishing project has been completed.

If the finish is bad, removing it should be the first step you should always undertake in your furniture restoration project. If the finish is fine, you’ll be able to move straight into preparing the surface for refinishing. By wiping down the surface of furniture you are working with, you can remove skin oils and furniture polishes you’ve used while cleaning or even traces of food or drink that have been left on the surface of the furniture.

Once you know the surface is clean, the next step in your furniture-refinishing project will be to sand the surface; this makes it easier for a coat of paint to stick. After sanding, be sure to wipe off any dust that may be on the surface with a damp rag. Let the furniture dry and apply your first coat of paint, cleaning up after you’re done.

Of course, your furniture-refinishing project’s goal may be to remove color from the table, desk or cabinet – not to add a new layer to it. In this case, you’ll need to strip the wood and possibly bleach out a previous stain that may have been darker than you would have preferred it.

Some furniture restorations are easy to take on as a weekend do-it-yourself projects. In other cases however, your idea of a simple furniture restoration project may be something that would be better left to a professional. This is often the case if you are working with furniture that needs to be repaired or furniture that has value as an antique.

Unless you know the difference between white carpenters’ glue and the Elmer’s glue your kids use in school, you should avoid trying to glue furniture as a step in the furniture restoration or repair process. The truth is that unless you are experienced with furniture restoration, you should avoid many of the do-it-yourself repairs you might encounter in your project. In other words, avoid trying to make any connections that you think will require a hammer or a nail gun as well as those requiring a screw and a screwdriver.

Unfortunately, when it comes to furniture restoration, some jobs will be bigger than you can handle during a weekend, perhaps even bigger than you can handle on your own. Although you may feel at the beginning of a project that you can handle it, you don’t want to end up midway through your project and realize you should have taken it to someone else in the beginning. There is simply nothing worse than realizing that one has gotten in over their heads or made an irreparable mistake.

While there are some furniture refinishing projects that are easy to do on your own at home, restoring an antique table and chairs might not be one of them – especially if you might want to sell them down the road. The same is true for antique-dish cabinets, old roll top desks, dovetailed bureaus, and other furniture. If you are looking at furniture restoration as a means to a sale, it may be best to consult with a professional before trying to do-it-yourself.

Woods are known to be an ideal material that is used for furniture; it is indeed due to its durability and look. It is a sought after by most people who wanted to have a comfy look in their sofa. Likewise, these wood chairs are also the common used in offices for a comfortable sitting place to work and relax.

However, one disadvantage of this wood furniture is that it is expensive, but it is not necessary to buy another brand new set in order to achieve a comfy place. If you have some old wood chair back in your home you can just repair it, and repaint it to give it a new look. With this, you can save money plus it is a great opportunity to improve your skills.

It is rather easy to have those old wood chairs fixed up than to spend a great deal of money. Though, it needs time to fix the chair, it is still worth the effort. And for fixing the chair, it is better to find an ideal place for it, make it sure that the place has enough light so that the scratches can be easily found for fixing.

You can use sandpapers for those revealing scratches on some parts of the chairs. Use some polishing after cleaning up the surface and fill those holes with some special wood putty. Remember that it should look pleasant and new again, so you do not have to overdo the work, just simple touch will do. And after it, you can add some polishing for some new look. Repairing your old chair is not a hard task, indeed it is a great way to save some fortune plus it can be a good hobby. Moreover, this is a way to preserve too much usage of woods that might be harmful to the environment.

It was probably the Egyptians who first learned to appreciate wooden tables and, of all the materials available today for furniture (glass, plastics, metals etc) a wooden dining table is still the preference of most people. It is not recorded how the Egyptians treated and cared for their wood to preserve its quality but they undoubtedly will have had some secrets.

Fortunately nowadays we have the TV bombarding us with information about the multitude of products to care for, clean and restore the beauty of our wood, but there are also some basic common-sense habits we can easily acquire that will protect our furniture and keep it looking beautiful; so before we think about commercial products, let’s just consider some of these.

Always use place mats and coasters to prevent heat damage, spillage and staining from food and drink. Use a table cloth or runner for greater protection. If spills do happen (and they will!) blot these up immediately, never allow liquid to soak into the wood. If you are using hot serving dishes, always place these on a trivet. Keep solvents away from wooden surfaces. Alcohol can damage as well, hence the need for coasters. Make sure your glasses have wide enough bases to allow them to sit solidly on the table. When moving furniture, lift it carefully, do not push or drag it.

Avoid positioning wooden furniture in front of radiators or fireplaces, or in direct sunlight. Wood is response to the humidity in the atmosphere but if the air is too dry, the wood might shrink. On the other hand, in high humidity, it could expand so if your table has drawers or drop-leaves these might become stiff to use in excessive humidity. The more durable woods are usually the more expensive ones: mahogany, oak, walnut and teak but soft woods like pine are used much more commonly in modern furniture and care needs to be taken with these as they dent easily.

Wherever you see dining sets for sale, you will usually see some proprietary wood preservatives on sale. These usually contain some kind of wax. For varnished wood, a regular wipe over with a dry, lint-free cloth is usually all that is needed, though an occasional rub with a light film of wax polish will ensure it retains its beautiful sheen forever. When buying your dining set, always enquire about the best way to clean the upholstery on the chairs and make a note of any advice for future reference.

You should care for all your wooden furniture in the same way, not just your dining set. It is very easy to neglect the side table sitting next to your sofa or chair with ottoman, as this is often buried beneath books, papers, the TV remote etc. Give it an airing and treat it to the same cleaning regime as your dining table and then you can relax beside it in comfort and ease.

Buying a television is hard work. In fact, it’s so hard you probably spent the last three-four months deciding on what kind of television you’re going to buy. If you have the occasion to buy a television, you need to find an entertainment center that will fit your needs well. No one wants to buy a modern TV stand that doesn’t really fit the mode of the television nonetheless the space it occupies. Buying a modern TV stand means you need to buy one that will conceal any wires that you will have. It also means looking good where it stands.

A good TV stand can look good just about anywhere in the house. The problem today is that there aren’t many that suit your house well. They are out there, though. If you look at online furniture retailers, you will find a number of television stands that can suit your fancy. If you decide to buy one ensure that you get both quality and price on them. You probably won’t be able to find the one that you want at your local store, but they are there if you know where to look.

The modern TV stand can take the shape of practically anything and it does. It’s hard to imagine a modern stand that will remain in a basic design. Buy a stand for TV that will not only have long lasting qualities, but also look great when people walk into the room. You’re not confined to just a simple design. Open up your imagination a little and watch it go far.

For those of you looking to buy a new mattress, you should serious consider a memory foam mattress. These have their advantages over traditional foam and coil-spring mattresses. For one thing, they are comparable in price so you will not be paying out thousands of dollars for one. In fact, you may even find them at incredible prices.

Whatever the case, regardless of budget, if you are shopping for such an item, you must consider how important it really is. Many people are stuck sleeping, and we use that term lightly, on terrible mattresses. Uncomfortable beds usually leave the person sleepless or with interrupted bouts of sleep.

The importance of sleep is second only to food and water. People need to sleep in order to function. For some, waking up several times in the middle of the night doesn’t consciously bother them, but for others, it renders them chronically fatigued to the point of exhaustion. It makes it difficult for them to focus, lacking energy, and the like

As exaggerated as this may sound, proper sleep, i. E. Real and restful sleep will revive you and can change your life dramatically by keeping you focused and energized throughout the day that follows. Ensure you also set the right temperature in your room to maintain comfort.

But, with memory foam mattresses, they conform to your body. After sleeping on them, they “remember.” Then, they hug your body lifting up in to the gaps and shape, hence offering support to those areas that are usually in the air. Furthermore, they sink down on the areas that weigh down more so that the body is never in compromised and uncomfortable positions.

For instance, if you lay flat on your back on the floor, you will see the parts of the body that are concave. Now roll on your side and see if this position is comfortable. Probably not! This is due to the fact that there is no support on certain parts. The same is true of most beds; they don’t support certain body parts which leave us waking up almost as tired as when we went to bed. And, this causes kinks and aches.

All these symptoms can be erased after a few good sleeps on a memory foam mattress. Healthy living requires healthy sleep. And, healthy sleep means resting on a good bed, in a quiet, dim-lit or dark room, which ever you prefer.
