Step ladders, also known as a-frame ladders, are usually short and designed for low-lying to medium areas in the household where a step stool will not do the job. They can help out in basic tasks, but they can also pose a danger if not properly used.

While in earlier years most were made of wood, today they are made out of either steel or high grade plastic. If it is made out of wood, before you use it you should visually inspect it. Wood ladders are prone to decay and rot and can easily break if in disrepair. Check for warping, especially around the feet of the ladder. This can make the ladder wobble and become very unsteady. If that is the case, toss the ladder and buy another made out of a higher quality material.

Before going up this type of ladder, make sure that it is in the fully locked position. Don’t just trust the sound of a snap to guide you; visually inspect it. While a second person is not usually needed to use step ladders, it still is a good idea for somebody to know that you are working up top. This is especially true around doorways and other high traffic areas where people go in and out. Make sure the surface is on is even and slip free; move carpets out of the way that could snag or bundle up. And do not let anybody (especially children) go underneath the ladder while working. It’s more than bad luck; it’s bad safety.

If you go to a metal working shop then you will note that their most key tool is a metal cutting band saw. These are brilliant for cutting large sheets of metal down to smaller more usable sizes and can even do an amount of precision work. Such band saws are friendly firmly to a surface or program and have a cutting blade that is round in size with incredibly sharp teeth.

While using any type of saw it is fundamental to use eye guard and also maintain the blade well lubricated. Nearly metal cutting band saws force you to feed the metal on to the blade, although other saws use gravity driven blades that cut from side to side metal that has been clamped down.

Condition you are following a smaller tool then you could bear in mind buying a convenient metal cutting saw. These can be used to cut through thinner sheet metal. A cold metal cutting saw is lightweight and therefore hand held rather than fastened down. Since with a band saw the blade is round, but this smaller tool permits a much greater precision than would otherwise be had.

You should have at least two screwdrivers in the toolbox: a standard and a Phillips. You may have other junk screwdrivers that you use for chisels or putty knives when no one is looking, but be sure to have two good ones. While I was working in heavy construction, I got in the habit of carrying a very large standard screwdriver in my apron.

It wasn’t always practical to carry a crowbar, chisel, or putty knife around, so instead I used my “magic screwdriver.” That’s what I still call it. It tickles me to hear someone I’m working with ask to borrow my “magic screwdriver.” It is a good all-purpose tool, but a lousy screwdriver. Using a screwdriver as a chisel to gouge out wood or as a small crowbar to increase your leverage tends to round the tip, so that it will slip out of screw slots.

The tip on the standard screwdriver should be flat on top with nice square edges. This helps the tip stay in the slot of the screw. The best Phillips screwdriver to have is a #2, a middle size. A #1 Phillips is for small screws, like those that fasten a door bottom or carpet-hold-down strip. A #3 is for large screws like door-hinge screws. The number notation is written either on the handle or on the shank.
